Far from being a myth, the way many people tries to organize their holidays lacks of strength in many points. First of all, they don’t even know where they want to go. Mate, sorry to say, but you definitely need to decide before doing any step! There’s no major way of losing time than acting and planning without objectives. You’ll do a lot of work and you’ll get nowhere. Understanding you have overcome this little but important first step, the first thing you should ask yourself is about your availability and flexibility. Availability will refer to the dates within you can travel and maximum number of days and flexibility depends on how flexible this availability is.

Depending on this you will look first for accommodation and later for flights, or viceversa. If you have great flexibility, start looking for flights. 1 day difference can make you save hundreds of dollars in each trip. Meanwhile, hotels are normally priced more accordingly to the season and variations are minimum. If no flexibility, then you should book first your accommodation and then just resign yourself and look for the best flight offer during the unavoidable dates.

Holiday Planning is not a process in which you do one step and continuously go back to change it. Once you have selected something please don’t look back. Stay with your option and plan accordingly any activities you are planning to do, organize your budget for this activities, plan the budget also for the meals, etc. If you are planning to stay in more than one place, please organize your internal transportation before you organize the accommodation in the different places. With a little planning, you can take a vacation with your kids this winter and return feeling as if you actually got the break you needed. Just follow these three golden rules:

1. Stay At A Resort With a Kid’s Program.

Whether you are planning a ski vacation or fun on an island in the Caribbean, make your life simpler by booking rooms at a resort with a day program for kids. Many larger resorts and some hotels have activity programs for children, where they can do arts and crafts, outdoor activities, play music, even take lessons in skiing, surfing, or whatever sport the area has to offer.

Some of the programs are for a few hours a day, others are half-day programs, and some will keep your kids busy all day if you want. Even if you never use the program, it’s a good thing to have one on site. Parents need time to relax, and your kids will want a break from you too. While your kids have a ball, you can get a massage, read a book poolside, or whatever strikes your fancy. When your kids rejoin you, there will be much to talk about.

Make sure you inquire about the ages the children’s program covers, and call to reserve space in advance. If you have your heart set on a specific hotel that does not have a program for children, find out if they partner with other hotels that do have one, or if there are fun classes that might be appropriate for children.

2. Keep the Schedule Flexible.

If there is one time your family should be free of obligations and rushing about, it’s on vacation. Kids – and therefore parents – experience over-scheduling in the real world; they don’t need it on vacation.

Your family vacation does not have to mean you spend 100% of your time doing activities that involve the whole family. When kids get dragged to “must-see” historical sites, or daylong shopping adventures, tempers are sure to flare.

If you are traveling with more than one adult, split up and let kids do what they want to do. You and your partner, or other adult family members can take turns chaperoning the kids, while the others do “grown-up stuff”.

Instead of stuffing the day with sightseeing and other activities, sit down together at breakfast (or dinner the night before) and kick around various options for the day. You might set a time for meals, so that older kids and teenagers can roam about and still have a time to check in with the grown-ups.

3. Learn Something New Together.

Family vacations are a fantastic way to reconnect with your kids and do some serious bonding. One of the best ways to do this is to sign up to learn something new together. OK, so you’ve seen my article on choosing a location “Best Hotel Location – Ixtapa Or Zihuatanejo?” (if you haven’t, perhaps you should do so now!). You’ve settled on a general area, perhaps even have your plane tickets in hand, now how in the heck to decide which Hotel is “right” for your specific desires?

First question:

How much effort and time do you want to invest? This is the single most important factor in determining how well your hotel choice “fits” you. Obviously, the more (productive) time spent researching hotel choices, the better off you will be to make an educated choice.

NOTE: In the previous paragraph I said “productive time spent”, not just “time spent”. Especially while doing research on the Internet, there are a vast number of “time-traps”… sites that are aimed towards making booking at any cost, with very little factual, unbiased information. The goal of EVERY booking site is to MAKE BOOKINGS! Sure, they may have reviews (*see note below*) and pretty pictures, but what they really want is your money. They do not care how they make it.

OK, back to the topic. In increasing order of time spent, your choices are basically these:

  1. Travel Agencies.
  2. Individual hotel or chain sites.
  3. On-line reservation sites.
  4. Individual Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo sites and forums.

NOTE: If you came here looking for links to recommended travel, hotel or booking sites, you will be disappointed. I do not include links to any sites, although I may write about some that I (personally) like. The idea is not to promote one site over another, the idea is to describe techniques and “food-for-thought”. Who is to say that WhoopeeBookings is better or worse than WhizBang Bookings?

Travel Agencies Simple right? Walk in, pick up a glossy brochure and peer at the 2 inch pictures. Choices? Let’s see (I am actually looking at one as I write this). 8 choices in Ixtapa and 3 in Zihuatanejo. Not bad you say? There exist hundreds of hotels, bungalows, villas, condos etc. In the Ixtapa Zihuatanejo area!

Why these specific hotels? I am not saying there aren’t any good ones in the list but the one and only criteria for being featured in a travel agency or package vacation company brochure is the following:

These are the hotels that do business with the agency. Period.

You can form your own conclusions. I am not in any way against travel agents or package tour companies — in fact you can often get a great deal from them, and if you happen to know an agent well and he or she has actually been to Ixtapa or Zihuatanejo, even better.

Hotel Web Sites

Obviously, you can’t expect a hotel’s website to give you complete unbiased reviews of their properties, but they do have one big advantage:

You are in direct contact with the hotel.

Calling their phone number or sending an email will put you in contact with the Hotel (or chain) directly. This can very often result in:

  • Cheaper rates — they don’t have to pay a commission to someone else.
  • Last-minute cancellation deals — who knows better than the front-desk or reservations clerks?
  • More room choices. Especially with package deals, you choices may be few. For example, the rooms with the nicest view may not be available in a package deal as it would “break” their $999 package price.
